Tip 1 - Trust your Photographer
This is hands down the most important tip I can give. This is my job, and I need you to trust that I’ve worked with many kids and families—I know how to guide a session and help kids warm up and cooperate naturally.
Sometimes that means letting your kids run around for 10 minutes while I focus on photographing you and your partner—and that’s completely okay. We’re still keeping an eye on them, and those little breaks often help reset their energy and mood.
My photography style is full of movement and real moments, not stiff poses. Honestly, sometimes your kids going a little wild makes for the best photos. Those genuine, unfiltered moments are where the magic really happens.
Tip 2 - Outfit choice
We want your outfits to feel cohesive, but just as importantly, we want everyone to be comfortable. There’s absolutely no need to go out and buy brand-new clothes (unless you want to!)—especially if you’re not sure how they’ll fit or feel. If something is itchy, too tight, or just not your child’s vibe, it will show in their mood and, ultimately, in your photos.
Your kids deserve to feel just as comfortable and confident as you do. When they feel good in what they’re wearing, everything flows more naturally.
If you’re unsure about the weather or temperature, it’s always a good idea to bring an extra outfit or pack some layers. This not only keeps everyone comfortable but also gives us a bit of flexibility during the session.
Tip 3 - let them be themselves
The best part about my job is that I get to photograph real people. That means real emotions and real moments! It’s more than okay if your kids are a little wild during our shoot—honestly, sometimes that’s when the best photos happen.
I’m not looking for perfection; I’m looking for connection, personality, and authenticity. The giggles, the energy, the chaos—that’s your family, and that’s what makes your photos meaningful.
And let’s be honest, we all have that classic crying-on-Santa photo tucked away somewhere… consider this no different! Those imperfect moments often become the ones you treasure most later on.
Tip 4 - bribes
I’m not above a little bribery for a good photo—within reason, of course! Sometimes a small incentive can go a long way in keeping kids engaged and excited during our time together.
That might look like a lollipop after the session (I’ll always check with you privately first), or even something you’ve already planned, like an afternoon at the pool or a trip to a jump house. Having something fun to look forward to can make a big difference in their attitude and cooperation.
Think of it less as a bribe and more as a reward—it helps keep things positive, lighthearted, and enjoyable for everyone involved.
Tip 5 - Be present!
Lastly, be present. This is a chance to slow down and genuinely connect with your family. When you focus less on the outcome and more on enjoying the moment, the photos will reflect that authenticity—and those are always the ones you’ll treasure most.
